DJ and MC sessions

Beat Routes was established in 2005 in response to a growing awareness of the benefit of offering disadvantaged young people a means of expressing themselves creatively. The organisation was initially established as a platform to develop skills in musical performance, both DJing and MCing, giving young people an opportunity to express themselves not only musically but also lyrically.

The following photo’s document the Beat Routes sessions between 2005 -2008. This was a particularly important time musically in the UK, the Grime scene was at a peak and another genre known as Dubstep was beginning to emerge. The pictures hopefully document the burst of creativity at this time and a unique moment in UK youth music culture.
